Finding a Job!

Finding a Job!

I am a recent college graduate, with a BA of Arts/English-Communications. I am very excited to find a job within my field. I learned so many improtant tools while attending Fort Lewis College, such as, webdesign, multimedia, newspaper/magazine writting styles, and how to apply these ideas and techniques in real life job situations. Which is great, but I am feeling a little overwhelemed in trying to find a job.

In my life I have three titles to my name, College Graduate, Mom, and Wife, and in trying to put all three titles under one hat has been at times difficult. Now I found myself a new title, Career Seeker! My true passion is working as a magazine writer. I find that descripitive writting is more interesting, and getting to the heart of a story is what makes a story more relatable. Magazine writting gets a side of a story that makes it more interesting and easier to read.

Now the search begins for the job of my dreams! Though the easiest thing to do would be a free lance writer, but I want more than that. I want to experience the hussle of it all. I want a job that will make me get up in the morning, get dressed and head out where there are PEOPLE! I have been a stay at home mom for the four years of college, it is time for me to get out there and experience a new stage of life.

A little advice

Hello Jennifer. I also have a B.A. in English. I even went so far as to get my M.A. And I understand how difficult it can be to decide on a career with that degree. I would suggest getting any kind of job that involves writing. I started off as a junior technical writer. From there I taught myself some simple web design concepts and about 2 years later, got a job as an elearning developer. From there, I graduated to Instructional Designer and then Sr. ID. I am now working on starting my own elearning/ID business.

I know you mention freelance writing which is great for a side job but it is very difficult to get by as your main profession. If you don't like the idea of being tied down into one position, try contracting. The pay is higher than with a full time job and you will get to gain different experiences in different industries. If you can get benefits through your husband, even better.

And one thing I can tell you about people with English or any other Humanities degree, we don't always fit into the whole corporate mindset. We're more free thinking and creative and corporate culture can really stifle that creativity.

Just a few thoughts for you. I wish you the best of luck in your search!
