This is a full time position that will require domestic and overseas travel on science research deployments. Research Pilot on various aircraft used to validate a variety of scientific and engineering disciplines. Will be assigned to fly large four-engine jets, two-engine jets, or turboprop aircraft and unmanned or remotely piloted aircraft. Only previously qualified U-2 or ER-2 pilot will fly the ER-2. Other duties may include but are not limited to: mission planning for other aircraft, navigator or flight engineer duties. These aircraft fly a wide variety of missions including world-wide atmospheric and earth science research flights. Missions often require intense preparation, flight planning, and in-flight coordination during flights with multiple aircraft participating in research campaigns.
Performs preflight planning, inspections and checks of the aircraft systems; performs weight & balance and performance computations, takeoff and landing data, navigation and clearances, monitors the operation of aircraft systems throughout the flight; and controlling aircraft environmental systems. Coordinates the operation of the aircraft experiments.
The pilot develops and/or modifies aircraft operating procedures to accomplish the research objectives. These may include procedures that enable the aircraft to operate safety outside the normal altitude and temperature ranges. Prepares and conducts training for the aircrew and researchers aboard the aircraft. May assist test pilots during developmental test flights of new systems or equipment on Airborne Science aircraft.
Essential Job Functions
- Partners with the non-technical training and employee development managers to plan, define and develop the overall training strategy for the corporation. Interacts with business unit and other management to determine technical training needs and priorities and implements plans.
- Oversees the design and development of the technical training curriculum and technical and user manuals, for both on-site and on-line programs. Determines when, how and where learning technologies should be used. Ensures business unit/technical area concurrence of content, identification of prerequisite skills and knowledge for trainees and that courses provide training for all levels of employees.
- Consults with management to conduct overall needs assessments to ensure training needs are met.
- Reviews course evaluation analysis and results to determine effectiveness of training sessions with regard to course content and trainer. Resolves issues and/or implements revisions to course materials as necessary to improve training effectiveness.
- Identifies vendor solutions for training. Reviews external training programs to determine feasibility and applicability of purchase and negotiates best buy.
- Keeps informed of and ensures employees maintain proficiency with all company products to provide effective training programs.
- Selects and hires employees. Trains and evaluates employees to enhance their performance, development, and work product. Addresses performance issues and makes recommendations for personnel actions. Motivates and rewards employees including providing salary increases, bonuses and promotions within allocated budgets and company guidelines.
- Prepares, recommends and oversees development of operating and personnel budgets. Monitors spending for adherence to budget plans, develops and recommends variances. Performs and/or oversees budget analysis.
QualificationsMust possess a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Commercial Pilot certificate or higher with an Airplane rating or the appropriate military rating.

Must possess a current first-class medical certificate or equivalent, in accordance with FAA regulations at time of appointment.
Applicant must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade, which has equipped the applicant with the particular competencies needed to successfully perform the duties of the position described above.
Resume must show flight experience to include documentation to show possession of the knowledge and skills required for the work by meeting certain minimum flight hour requirements in manned aircraft, including recency of flight experience as stated above (refer to OPM Operating Manual for GS-2181: Aircraft Operations Series requirements). Must indicate flying time/type in last 12 month, 24 month and 36 months. Please describe your experience fully in your resume to include experience with large aircraft.
Desired:
The work requires a detailed knowledge of, and extensive experience in, aircraft operations, fixed-wing and/or rotary-wing aircraft. Knowledge of and proficiency in aeronautical engineering and related engineering and scientific fields is highly desired.
Specialized experience is defined as that which has given the applicant knowledge of world-wide aircraft operations, flight test programs, and testing evaluation techniques/procedures.
Completion of a flight test course such as a military flight test school or the FAA flight test pilot course, or at least 1 year of experience either flight testing aircraft for engineering approval (civilian or military) or analyzing aircraft performance data is highly desired.
Basic Education Requirement:
A bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited college or university is required. Major study in engineering, physical science, astronomy, geology, earth sciences, atmospheric science, mathematics, life sciences, computer science, or other field of science is highly desired.
