GENERAL DESCRIPTION Provide education to the African American community;advocate within that community to increase community awareness and response to domestic and sexual violence, prevention strategies and access to services.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THIS POSITION:
1. Provide educational presentations at community locations
2. Build and maintain community relationships to further prevention strategies
3. Attend and actively participate in community groups and meetings to engage the community in ending domestic and sexual violence
4. Ensure required reporting and documentation is completed
5. Develop education and prevention strategies for specific communities
6. Provide crisis intervention to survivors in when out in the community (as needed)
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Bachelors degree in communication, education, psychology, sociology, related field or equivalent experience
2. One-year experience in providing educational presentations
3. One to two years experience working with multi-ethnic communities
4. Experience with Microsoft Suites and other computer applications
5. Excellent communication and customer service skills
6. Fluency in speaking and writing English
7. Ability to drive and have reliable transportation and a Texas drivers license
8. Knowledge of basic public health educational models and primary prevention strategies
9. Ability to speak effectively in public.
10. Understanding and sensitivity towards issues of domestic and sexual violence as they relate to adult and children.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
COMMUNITY SPECIALIST DUTIES
1. Coordinate educational programs for the African American community about issues of domestic and sexual violence, and the services available to survivors.
2. Develop and maintain personal contacts with organizations and agencies that provide service to the community.
1. Identify information and referral resources for the African American community.
2. Provide coverage for the hotline as needed.
3. Work cooperatively with other agency staff to ensure optimal utilization of resources and efficient management of the program.
4. Use resources to provide services to community members as needed.
5. Provide monthly and annual reports on programming.
6. Assist designing and implementing training to professionals on the topics of domestic and sexual violence as it relates to the African American community.
7. Work as a community liaison to identify area organizations and service providers and develop strategies to deliver appropriate education, training, and outreach counseling services.
VOLUNTEER AND INTERN DUTIES:
1. Assist in training, orienting, supervising, and coordinating volunteers and interns for outreach services.
COMMUNITY EDUCATION DUTIES:
1. Attend the agencys Community Education Training.
2. Participate in public relations projects as requested.
3. Participate in media requests and develop relationships with media representatives within the African American community.
OTHER ADMINISTRATIVE DUTIES: 15%
- Initiate, retrieve, and respond to E-mail, voice mail, and written correspondence
- Participate in staff meetings and retreats
3. Complete and turn in all necessary paperwork for accounting, i.e. reimbursement, vacation leave, timesheet, and, etc., in a timely manner
- Should such duties become routine, the job description will be reviewed and revised.
- Participate in committees as needed.
- Complete assigned projects from the supervisor.
