The Marin County Free Library (MCFL) is a special taxing district that operates ten branch libraries in Marin under the authority of the Board of Supervisors. It provides public library services to the residents of the unincorporated areas of the County and the cities of Corte Madera, Fairfax, and Novato.

ABOUT THE POSITION

There is currently a need for on-call, part-time contingent (temporary) Community Library Specialists (CLS) at the following locations:

Civic Center, Novato, South Novato, West Marin- Bolinas, Inverness, Point Reyes, Stinson Beach

Bilingual candidates are encouraged to apply for all locations. 

Responsibilities may include: 

  • Supporting daily branch operations as part of a team or independently 
  • Providing reference, computer and technology assistance to all ages
  • Performing all related circulation duties
  • Responding to communications (phone, email, and in-person) regarding library services, programs, policies and procedures
  • Acquainting patrons with the various services of the public library, including community programs and resources
  • Assisting with special events, presentations, or programs such as children's story time
  • Assisting with special projects as assigned, such as collections maintenance or visual displays

The Community Library Specialist position reports directly to a Branch Manager. Under direction, a CLS performs a range of library tasks in a regional branch library or oversees daily operations in a small community branch library, coordinates community outreach programs and performs special projects and related duties as assigned. 

Bilingual Testing/Certification: To be eligible for the bilingual pay differential, the successful candidate must possess bilingual skills and must demonstrate proficiency in both Spanish and English prior to appointment.  A bilingual proficiency exam will be administered to ensure the candidates possess the appropriate skill level to meet the requirements.

The ideal candidate works effectively both independently and in a team environment; is flexible and adaptable, able to prioritize tasks and navigate occasional stressful or emergency situations, such as power outages, with relative ease.

The ideal candidate is skillful in maintaining positive relationships with all staff, patrons and community partners; is an excellent listener and communicator with a strong set of customer service skills, who is comfortable with public speaking, outreach, and community engagement. Must be comfortable with computer and library technology, including copy machines, scanners, email, databases, and virtual meeting platforms.

Testing and Eligible List: Depending on the number of qualified applications received, the examination may consist of a highly qualified review, application screening, online assessment, written examination, oral examination, performance examination, or any combination to determine which candidates' names will be placed on the eligible list.  The eligible list established from this recruitment may be used to fill the current vacancy, and any future vacancies for open, fixed-term, full-time or part-time positions which may occur while the list remains active.
 
Disaster Service Workers: All County of Marin employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employment with the County requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.
