This position will serve as support technician for the M-Lab and works with users of varied backgrounds helping with experiments and projects, installing, operating, and maintaining a wide variety of specialized equipment, tools and software. This position has the responsibility of coordinating with the M-Lab student board to ensure smooth operation and staffing of the M-Lab. This position also has the responsibility of monitoring and training users on the using of equipment and safety; as well as monitoring usage and operating cost of the facilities (including materials, supplies, manpower).
Required Qualifications:
Extensive knowledge of electronics and mechanical systems; including troubleshooting, calibration, test procedures, analysis, and repair of associated sensitive scientific instrumentation/complex lab equipment. Considerable knowledge of policies, procedures, and applicable regulations associated maintaining laboratory safety systems and the use/storage of lab supplies that include specialized gas cylinders. Working knowledge of measuring devices including micrometers, calipers, etc. as well as understanding of standard and metric units. Working knowledge of computers and peripheral equipment repair techniques.
• Considerable skill in the repair of a variety of complex electro-mechanical equipment.
• Considerable skills in the operation of machine shop related equipment (mills, lathes, band saws, drill press, welding machines), 3D Printing, and electronic equipment.
• Skill in the operation of electronic test equipment in maintaining and repairing lab instrumentation.
• Strong basic math skills.
• Strong problem-solving skills.
• Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility.
• Demonstrated ability to read and understand schematics, block diagrams, and wiring diagrams, mechanical drawings, flow charts, and service manuals.
• Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.
• Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain effective interpersonal relationships using tact and diplomacy and possessing a customer service focus.
• Demonstrated ability to provide instruction and training to graduate students and undergraduate students in the safe operation of scientific instrumentation and lab equipment.
• Demonstrated ability to use Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel.
• Demonstrated ability to maintain records and logs. Considerable experience and training in machine shop operations and electromechanical systems, including maintenance. Additional Considerations (supplemental knowledge, skills, abilities, experience, licensure, certification: Journeyman’s card (Apprenticeship graduate), with considerable experience or equivalent. Extensive experience in machine shop operations and electromechanical systems. Some experience working in a maker space or fabrication lab. Some experience working with students in higher education. Conditions of Employment: This is an on-campus position with working hours from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm.
