Full Job Description
Agriculture Reporter
Are you a storyteller passionate about agriculture and rural life? Tri-State Neighbor is hiring an entry-level reporter to travel the gravel back roads of South Dakota, Southern Minnesota and northwestern Iowa, meeting farmers, ranchers and rural residents. You'll learn about the issues that impact rural America and the agricultural industry most and celebrate the stories that make this way of life unique. This position is based anywhere in the areas it will be reporting.
As our reporter, you will have a curiosity with a million questions that can be formed into a host of story ideas. You will be as comfortable getting your boots muddy in a cattle pen as you are walking the halls of the state Capitol to talk ag policy. You'll create a network of sources in the world of agriculture and represent our publication with a smiling face at farm shows and industry conventions.
We're looking for someone who understands the principles of journalism ethics, is able to turn data into meaningful stories with real-life examples, and has a strong grasp of AP style. We need someone who can quickly clean press releases of their marketing language, make the necessary follow up calls and post the information to our website and social channels. Our reporter will also need photography skills and social media savvy.
We offer great flexibility and an easy-going atmosphere. You'll have the freedom to explore the topics that interest you most. You'll work from home but must reside within our coverage area and be willing to travel to cover events and attend farm shows. Working hours are flexible, within reason, as long as work is being completed on deadline.
