About the Education Department

The Met's Department of Education-dedicated to making art meaningful and accessible for everyone-is central to the mission of the Museum. The Department is a national and international leader in museum-based education and public programming, pushing boundaries through continuous innovation and experimentation. In-person and virtual programs include high school and college internships that promote career development and diversity; PreK-12 educator programs that train teachers to integrate art into curricula across disciplines; lectures and symposia that feature preeminent artists and scholarship; daily tours in multiple languages, and so much more.

GENERAL STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:

As the Associate Educator, you will oversee the development and implementation of programs to engage graduate students, scholars, researchers, and faculty through fellowships, gallery programs, and faculty programs. You will plan and lead the Museum's Fellowship Program for art historians, conservators, scientists and educators at the pre- and post-doctoral level. You will establish short and long-term goals for high quality, intellectually engaging programs for the fellows, identifying opportunities to expand the reach of the fellowship program and contribute to the field of museum education. You will work with staff within Education and across the museum, to contribute to the strategic planning and resource building for Academic and Research Programs.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:

  • Actively contribute new research and practice-based knowledge to the museum education field, serving as a resource for students and peers.

  • Plan, develop, and implement the year-round Fellowship Program activities including onboarding, orientation, workshops, conversations, and other programs for fellows that support their learning and professional development

  • Plan, produce, and implement the Fellowship Program's annual research-sharing series, "Research Out Loud: Met Fellows Present"

  • Provide year-round resources and support for fellows and their departmental supervisors

  • Develop marketing and outreach strategies for promoting and diversifying the Fellowship Program, including editing the website and developing social media posts, as well as attending career fairs and conferences to support ARP's wider outreach

  • Plan and lead faculty programs in collaboration with the Educator in Charge and other ARP staff

  • Oversee Fellowship and faculty programs budgets, track expenses, evaluate programs on a regular basis to review program effectiveness, and prepare annual reports for Development and donors.

  • Oversee the Fellowship application process, and assist with the processing and review of incoming fellowship applications

  • Serve as a permanent member of the Internship Review Committee and read internship applications every application cycle

  • Supervise a Program Associate and work with them to guide/oversee a Fellowship Alumni Association and related resources. Plan and implement programs and events for the Alumni Association,

  • Teach audiences of all ages as needed, with a particular focus on college and university students, and regularly lead public and private Observant Eye programs

  • Assist other Education teams as required

REQUIREMENTS & QUALIFICATIONS:

  • M.A. in art history, museum education, or a related field; Ph.D. strongly preferred.

  • Minimum five years of experience of full-time work in art museums, cultural institutions, an/or higher education; experience leading a large fellowship or internship program strongly preferred.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of current theories and practices pertaining to adult learning in both formal and informal settings.

  • Knowledge and understanding of undergraduate and graduate student audiences and the academic community; experience teaching in a university setting strongly preferred.

  • Demonstrated excellence teaching with original works of art in a gallery setting

  • Knowledge of foreign languages preferred

  • Evidence of collaborative skills and experience leading teams through complex projects.

  • Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail and ability to multitask.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated capacity to effectively and professionally communicate with different constituencies, verbally and in writing.

  • Excellent communicator and ability to effectively maintain dozens of key relationships with diverse museum departments.

  • Demonstrated management experience, including experience supervising staff, fellows, and/or interns

  • Demonstrated experience and commitment to working with individuals from a wide range of social, economic, and cultural backgrounds.

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, experience with database systems, including Excel and solid computer skills required.,

  • Ability to work evening and weekend hours as needed.

COMPENSATION RANGE:

  • Pay Range: $85,000.00 - $90,000.00 / Annually
