This position involves performing technical and analytical services essential to the efficient operation of a power generation plant. The primary responsibilities include water treatment and chemical analysis of water and wastewater, with the aim of providing chemical protection for steam generating equipment and minimizing outages caused by corrosion and deposits in steam cycle components. Additionally, the position focuses on minimizing efficiency losses and potential replacements of steam generating, condensing, and turbine mechanical components. Compliance with governmental environmental regulations pertaining to water discharges is also a key duty in this role.
Additionally, this position provides plant-wide leadership for chemical protection of the boiler, turbine, and related steam generating equipment per Southern Company guidelines. Additional responsibilities may include: ensuring compliance with federal and state environmental regulations by directing the proper operation of pollution control equipment; ensuring the provision of high quality demineralized water in storage at all times to support plant operations; assisting in managing the O&M and capital budgets; initiating, planning, and managing chemistry projects; and providing leadership and technical assistance on chemistry-related issues to other Southern Company Generation facilities.
Key Duties:
Operate and maintain water treatment plant equipment to produce demineralized water and service water for various plant applications.
Perform sampling and analytical testing of various media (process water, storm water, cooling water systems, sewage treatment plant, etc.)
Calibrate and maintain laboratory equipment and instrumentation.
Manage inventory of chemicals and laboratory consumables.
Oversee the handling and transportation of bulk chemicals and unloading.
Manage chemistry systems operating and capital budgets
Assist in ensuring compliance with applicable environmental and safety & health regulations
Job Experience and Education:
Bachelor’s degree in chemistry or another scientific field, with a minimum of 25 quarter hours or 12 semester hours in Chemistry.
Experience and proficiency in the use, calibration, and maintenance of laboratory instrumentation and equipment, with knowledge of proper analytical methods and techniques.
2 years of industrial experience preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Broad knowledge of analytical, inorganic, environmental, and water chemistries.
Understanding of chemical treatment methods and the operation of water treatment plants.
Ability to troubleshoot mechanical systems, interpret schematic diagrams, and identify water process problems.
Proficiency in various Microsoft applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.

Must be available for night, overtime, weekend and holiday work as required.
This position requires call-out and overtime and works 8 hour shifts on a rotating day/weekend/evening schedule.
Must be able to work in extreme climates and environments (e.g., cold, hot, dusty, humid).
The essential job functions include lifting 50 pounds, working/climbing at heights, and crawling through small confined spaces for inspections.
