Job Summary
The Custodial and Grounds Services (CGS) department is seeking a Business Administrator to supervise its administrative team and manage daily operations.

The department's work enables the continuation of patient care, student housing, animal husbandry, utility distribution, snow removal, debris removal, and other critical infrastructure support. Custodial and Grounds staff are designated as critical employees, which means in the event of a University of Michigan emergency reduction in operations, including a public health emergency, suspension of academic classes, or during weather-related events, critical employees are expected to report to work.
Responsibilities*
- Participate in the Custodial and Grounds Department Lead Team and functionally manage department administrative staff activities and personnel.
- Provide high-level administrative support to the Assistant Vice President of Custodial and Grounds.
- Oversee department employee engagement and positive culture initiatives and activities.
- Collaborate with the Facilities and Operations Training group to identify, develop, and coordinate training programs for CGS Non-Bargain For staff.
- Ability to effectively create and deliver presentations, adopting a style to suit the audience's needs
- Coordinate department-wide hiring, including managing job postings in the university's enterprise system.
- Oversee the department's annual space survey and biannual capital equipment inventory.
- Assist with managing and updating departmental communication, including staff video monitors and the department's intranet and internet sites.
- Manage Custodial and Grounds Department outage and status communication on the department intranet site.
- Special projects and additional duties as assigned.
Additional Responsibilities
- Administer FMLA and sick time policies.
- Manage the CGS administrative office.
- Manage content in the department work-loading systems, CompuClean, and the Grounds Workplan.
Required Qualifications*
- Bachelor's degree in Business Administration or a comparable degree.
- Minimum five years of experience working in a similar type of position.
- Minimum three years of management experience with direct supervision over employees.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with a broad range of people across all levels of the organization.
- Exceptional organization and attention to detail.
- Ability to take initiative on projects and make decisions.
- Strong problem-solving skills.
- Exceptional work ethic.
- Ability to handle sensitive information with confidentiality.
- Familiarity with standard onboarding and training competencies.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office software applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Google Suite (Gmail, Drive, Docs, Sheets, Slides).
Desired Qualifications*
- Master's degree from an accredited college or university.
- Minimum five years of management experience, supervising at least three employees.
- Experience working in higher education.
- Experience working with union employees.
- Experience facilitating training courses.
- Ability to coach and influence employees positively.
