Full Job Description

Job Summary

The applicant must have a passion for nature and a desire to help others learn about it.  They must be comfortable working outdoors. They must also demonstrate a strong interest in and commitment to a lifelong pursuit of knowledge and discovery about the natural world, communication of this knowledge, and commitment to the preservation of natural areas and biodiversity. While the applicant may be enrolled in any concentration or program, they are typically enrolled in an environmental-related major.

Responsibilities*

  • Work closely with the EIC's habitat manager to learn the process for updating the habitat management plan for the Environmental Study Area (ESA)
  • Assist with surveying the native flora of various habitats in the ESA in order to describe and assess changes in the composition of ESA flora over the past 10 years
  • Compose and submit a field survey report to the EIC's habitat manager describing methods and findings 
  • Discuss with the EIC habitat manager how the survey findings might inform potential future ESA habitat stewardship practices 
  • Other designated tasks requested by the EIC staff

Desired Qualifications*

  • Bachelor's degree in environmental field
  • Experience in field identification of native flora including wildflowers, grasses, sedges, shrubs, and trees 
  • Ability to learn and implement line transect methodology for determining and assessing the character and composition of native flora in various habitat types
  • Experience in recording field survey observations in written form
  • Willingness to learn and apply best practices for field monitoring associated with habitat management 
  • Ability and willingness to work in challenging field conditions
