Tenure-Track Assistant Professor of Multilingual Education
Full Job Description

The Warner Graduate School of Education and Human Development at the University of Rochester seeks a full-time, tenure-line Assistant Professor of Multilingual Education. This faculty member will pursue research related to language learning, teaching, curriculum, and/or teacher education that advances our institutional mission. They also will lead the TESOL and World Languages masters degree and teacher certification programs and inspire teacher-leaders to serve the learning needs of linguistically diverse students and families in and beyond the Rochester area. We are looking for a colleague with an inclusive orientation who can build research and practice partnerships across constituencies; and whose scholarship and teaching confront complex societal challenges and promote equity- and justice-centered educational change. The term of employment will begin on July 1, 2025.

The principal duties associated with this position are to:

  • Conduct and disseminate research in multilingual learning, teaching, curriculum, and/or teacher education;
  • Teach graduate-level courses and seminars in language learning and pedagogies, multilingualism, and the sociocultural and institutional contexts of multilingual education;
  • Mentor PhD and EdD students in fields and interest areas aligned with their domains of knowledge and experience, and advise masters degree students in the TESOL and World Languages certification programs;
  • Establish a vision for and lead the TESOL and World Languages masters degree and teacher certification programs and develop new programming in Bilingual Education;
  • Collaborate with colleagues in the Teaching and Curriculum Department, faculty across the Warner School, and professionals at regional institutions and organizations to strengthen programming and professional learning in multilingual education;
  • Seek and secure external funding to support research and programming priorities; and
  • Fulfill appropriate service roles in the university and community and maintain an active presence in national, state, and/or local professional organizations.

Ideal candidates for this position will have qualifications and experiences that include:

  • A Ph.D. in teaching, learning, and curriculum or a closely related subject area, earned prior to the positions starting date;
  • At least three years of licensed multilingual teaching experiences in a P-12 setting;
  • A demonstrated commitment to preparing effective, justice-oriented educators and researchers;
  • Deep understanding of current conditions and scholarship related to multlingual education and demonstrated commitment to linguistic diversity and inclusion;
  • Knowledge of and experience with funding streams and partnerships that support research and programming to meet the needs of language educators, multilingual learners, and their communities;
  • Experience in course design, teaching, and student advisement at the university/college level; and
  • An ability to work productively with collaborators on programs of scholarship, teaching and curriculum, and professional learning.
