The Director, Homelessness Initiatives will be at the center of United Way of Greater Los Angeles’ (UWGLA) inspiring and historic effort to end homelessness in LA County. Home For Good is California’s largest public/private partnership to end homelessness and the largest collective impact effort on social change in LA County. In particular, the Director will provide leadership and management of UWGLA’s Home For Good team and broad coalition on matters of policy, systems change, funding, research, and measurement.


As a member of UWGLA’s leadership team, the Director, Homelessness Initiatives will provide strategic input and participate in efforts to promote the organization’s values and participate in the design and implementation of organizational strategy and initiatives.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate a deep passion for ending homelessness, possess a strong work-ethic, enjoy dynamic problem-solving, operate with a team & mission-first mindset, and exhibit a track record of cultivating meaningful and productive relationships internally and externally. 



  • Develop, direct, and execute strategies for Home For Good to ensure homelessness in Los Angeles is rare, brief, and non-recurring. Toward that end, activate partners, and harness Home For Good’s assets in data and research, grantmaking, systems change pilots/projects, and advocacy in order to:
    • 1) Cultivate Healthy Systems: ensure our coordinated entry system – and all its component pieces - helps our chronically homeless neighbors exit the streets & shelters quickly and permanently, 
    • 2) Grow Regional Impact: cultivate regional leadership and translate County-wide strategies, systems, and resources to meaningfully localize the solutions to ending homelessness,
    • 3) Manage Inflow: Target upstream systems to prevent inflow of homelessness and downstream supports to improve retention, and
    • 4) Build Capacity,  Partnerships, and Accountability across public agencies and service providers to be stronger and smarter
  • Work in partnership with the Managing Director, Homelessness & Strategic Initiatives to eventually chair or co-chair the following coalition tables: Homelessness Policy Research Institute, Home For Good Policy Team, Funders Collaborative, and Regional Homelessness Advisory Council
  • Work in partnership with the Director, Operations & Business Intelligence and Director, Grants Initiatives to lead and manage a matrixed team of 3-5 professional staff, providing effective oversight, leadership, mentorship, performance management, and proactively addressing personnel and operational issues that may arise
  • Identify important policy updates, challenges, and calls to action to fuel Everyone In, United Way’s public awareness, communication, and organizing effort on homelessness in partnership with the Senior Director, Impact Initiatives
  • Represent United Way and the Home For Good coalition as a key advisor, thought leader, subject matter expert, and speaker at decision tables, community meetings, events, public rallies, and media interviews
  • Lead ongoing community engagement process, including nonprofit partners, researchers, corporate leaders, public sector partners, and faith communities, to seek input/ideas for homelessness strategies
  • Ensure Home For Good has the resources necessary to successfully operate (minimum $1M) and for catalytic investments to be made through the Home For Good Funders Collaborative (minimum $5M)
  • Work collaboratively across the Community Impact team to ensure alignment and integration of homelessness work with housing, education and economic mobility strategies
  • Support implementation of the Community Impact Team’s annual goals and the organization’s strategic plan
  • Participate in cross-departmental and organizational planning and volunteer efforts as needed
  • Work collaboratively with Development & Engagement and Marketing & Communications teams to articulate the value of this work and provide meaningful engagement opportunities for donors and community
  • Serve on the Community Impact Team Leadership Team and UWGLA Leadership Team
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned


  • Minimum 7 years of work experience required; experience in systems change, policy work, service delivery, and proven ability to develop, manage, and evaluate large-scale initiatives preferred
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience required; additional graduate study or additional professional fellowships preferred
  • Working knowledge of root causes and solutions to homelessness
  • Should possess strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills, as well as the ability to accurately manage and analyze data
  • Should possess experience in direct staff management and preferably experience in directing team members and stakeholders that are not under direct supervision
  • Demonstrated success in project and/or initiative management, especially efforts that stretch across stakeholders
  • Demonstrated success in internal and external collaboration, joint problem solving, and constructive team dynamics
  • Demonstrated experience in policy and systems change and/or program design
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with all organizational levels within a diverse environment
  • Demonstrated experience in grant-seeking and managing operational budgets
  • Must be able to transfer thoughts and ideas into concrete, coherent actions, while applying continuous quality improvement processes to evaluate outcomes
  • Must be able to exercise initiative, independent good judgment, flexibility, discretion, and solid decision making
  • Must be able to utilize creative strategies to engage stakeholders and maintain effective working relationship with key stakeholders
  • Must be able to successfully consolidate competing priorities from stakeholders toward a singular goal
  • Must be able to prioritize work, meet specific deadlines, and make appropriate adjustments to changing circumstances as necessary
  • Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint) is essential
