Job Description

Thanks for your interest in becoming The Sun's editorial assistant. Here's some information about the magazine and the job.

The Sun is an ad-free, non-profit journal with more than 70,000 subscribers nationwide. Having started The Sun with a fifty-dollar loan in 1974, I'm enormously grateful that it has not only survived but flourished. I never want the magazine to rest on its laurels, however. I'm looking for an editorial assistant who will handle a broad range of duties and help The Sun continue to grow more truthful, more provocative, more compassionate, more inspiring.

As The Sun's editorial assistant, you'd evaluate submissions and offer suggestions for revisions. You'd also maintain contracts, compile the Contributors page for each issue, help me keep up with my correspondence and play a key role in proofreading the magazine while assisting with editing as needed. You'd assist with special projects and handle some of the administrative duties for the office as well.

This job calls for someone confident in his or her writing, editing, and proofreading abilities, and well acquainted with the political, cultural, and philosophical ideas discussed in The Sun. Because the editorial assistant handles an array of tasks, she or he must be impeccably organized and meticulous.

Our staff consists of twelve employees who work in the office and seven freelancers who work at home. (The editorial assistant works in the office.) Since each staff member carries substantial responsibilities, being able to work quickly and accurately under deadline pressure is essential. The office environment is informal, just a group of people working together on something that matters to them. An aptitude for relating to others with warmth and respect in a highly collaborative environment is critical. We provide competitive compensation with excellent benefits including paid vacation and personal days; fully paid medical, dental and disability insurance; and a retirement savings plan.

The Sun is an equal opportunity employer. We strongly encourage people from diverse backgrounds to apply.
