Job Description

Summary:

Helping to maintain people’s independence is the cornerstone philosophy of Meals on Wheels. Since 1974 we have been providing hot, nutritious meals to home bound elderly and disabled persons in Duval County. All MOW Drivers/Deliverers will be directly responsible to the Driver Manager. The major function of the Meals on Wheels Ambassador is to deliver meals in a safe and timely manner with exceptional care, while providing information and referral as well as the highest level of customer service. This position also supports the daily operation of the Cathedral Café, a congregate meal site located within The Cathedral Terrace. Cathedral Terrace is HUDD funding housing for seniors and disabled adults.

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • Must be at least 21 years of age or older
  • Previous food service delivery experience preferred
  • CPR Certified
  • Proficient reading and writing comprehension skills
  • Must communicate and relate well with the elderly
  • Must have a valid driver’s license in the State of Florida
  • Demonstration of food safety and the ability to train and implement requirements
  • Must have a current Motor Vehicle Record with no more than two (2) moving violations and no more than one (1) at fault accidents within the past three (3) years. No DUI’s or DWI’s reported within the last five (5) years.
  • Must submit to Level 2 background screening, drug testing and National Sex Offender Public Registry screening.
  • Previous Experience in Food Serving to large groups preferred

Working Conditions/Physical Requirements:

  • Lifting capability of up to 50 pounds repeatedly
  • Climbing stairs repeatedly
  • Entering and exiting vehicles repeatedly up to 200 times per day that have a high ground clearance

Essential Functions:

  • Capable of working in a team-oriented environment
  • Ensuring that clients are eligible for continued service by ongoing observation
  • Helping identify clients who are in need of further assistance and programs
  • Bringing unmet needs to the attention of the Meals on Wheels Driver Manager
  • Providing a positive impact while representing the agency when operating vehicles and interacting with clients and volunteers
  • Wash exterior and clean interior of vehicles as assigned
  • Assist in the daily operations of the Cathedral Café senior congregate meal site, with the ability to operate Café on as needed basis.
  • When assigned to work the Café, help coordinate/supervisor the volunteers assigned to the site.

I. General Duties:

Pre-Meal Delivery

  1. Report to the kitchen of Cathedral Cares at the designated time.
  2. Assure that the vehicle you are assigned to is fully operational for the day's deliveries. (i.e... full of gas, tires properly inflated, etc...)
  3. Assure that you have the proper meal count for that day by reviewing what the kitchen has, what your route needs and counting all items.
  4. Count your meals, including milk, bread, fruits, etc..., to make sure you have an adequate supply for your route assignment.
  5. Load your vehicle keeping in mind the use of proper food safety and food handling techniques.
  6. Maintain the driver delivery route schedule and designated times.

Meal Delivery:

  1. Daily preparation for meal delivery must include the use of a route book. The Route Book will notate all meals to be delivered that day. Any meals not delivered must be properly documented.
  2. f a client is not home, and the office has confirmed that they will not receive a meal, please leave a door knocker at the residence.
  3. Always assure that our client is home when you are delivering the meals. If the client is bed-bound, face-to-face contact is required.
  4. If you find a client deceased, incapacitated, or seriously injured, notify the office immediately and stay with the client until Fire Rescue or Jacksonville Sheriffs Office arrives.
  5. Report any unusual incidents to the Driver Manager immediately! This means if you run into a tree, run over a cat or dog, hit a mailbox, or animals, etc… call the Driver Manager and if unavailable, the Meals on Wheels Director. This is for your protection as well as ours.
  6. Report any accident to your supervisor immediately regardless of who is at fault regardless of how small the accident is. Any driver or deliverer who fails to do so can be terminated IMMEDIATELY!!!
  7. Customer Service is to be a primary concern when delivering meals. The population we serve is home bound. Keep in mind that you may be the only face they see today!

After The Meals Have Been Delivered:

  1. Remove all undelivered meals and submit them to the Driver Manager.
  2. Wipe down the ovens and interiors of the vehicles daily, disposing of all waste material properly. Report any needed repairs to the Driver Manager.
  3. Wash out the coolers to insure their cleanliness.
  4. Report any clients who have not received a meal to the Driver Manager.
  5. Report any vehicle problems or maintenance issues to the Driver Manager.
  6. Verify all required equipment is present and operational. Report any discrepancies to the Driver Manager

II. Additional Duties:

  1. Report all vehicle maintenance needs to the Driver Manager promptly.
  2. Participate in any established vehicle maintenance program. Properly report your findings on the required vehicle log.
  3. Notify and assist the office in maintaining the computer route sheets in the order in which you run them. The changes will be turned in on a weekly basis.
  4. Assist in delivering vehicles to repair shops as needed.
  5. Supports the Cathedral Café, a congregate meal site located within The Cathedral Terrace when assigned
  6. Any other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Measurable Evaluation of Performance:

  1. Completes all required pre-service & at least 4 hours of in-service training annually.
  2. Demonstrate safety, courtesy, and professionalism in all aspects of your job
  3. Must report any non-work-related “at fault” moving violations or accidents within 30 days of occurrence. Violations and/or accidents that occur while conducting business on behalf of the organization must be reported immediately. Must submit to annual DMV screening of driving record.
  4. Achieve tardiness and attendance standard established by the organization, arriving to work each day, neatly groomed and in adherence to the dress code policy.
  5. Meets established deadlines for the completion of all required documentation, including: incident reports, vehicle logs, route books, and leave requests
