RLA Engineering specializes in Outsourced Design, Contract Engineering and Engineering Services for some of the leading companies in the Consumer and Computer industries. We are currently looking for an individual to join our Managed Services team, working on-site and integrating into our client's team. Experienced candidates must be able to work in a professional yet fast paced environment.

Position Summary

The Lead Embedded Systems Engineer transitions prototype electronics and mechanical modules to a new system FW architecture for mass production and develops innovative leading technology to be used in the specialty coffee industry. This position is a SW/FW technical leader among a team of EE, SW and mobile app engineers. The Lead Engineer collaborates with clients and RLA Engineering staff to determine and execute the needed technical strategies and tactics to support client manufacturer’s NPI schedule including selecting a new system PCA microprocessor and re-architecting the system FW.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Works in a team of EE (HW design), SW, and Mobile App engineers, leading the system FW architecture and design and applicable design reviews
  • Works collaboratively with Director of Operations to define the scope of new potential developmental projects and initial product FW requirements
  • Creates, maintains, and communicates detailed development schedules for system FW architecture and design
  • Identifies internal and external resources required to support the system FW development schedule; collaborates with Director of Operations to ensure that required resources are assigned to the project as needed
  • Ensures that system FW product requirements are documented and managed in a timely manner to allow efficient design progress
  • Maintains disciplined FW revision control and releases throughout the development process
  • Participates in required management reviews for assigned tasks and presents the development status in these reviews
  • Facilitates communication between client and engineering team regarding system FW development; addresses concerns and resolves issues
  • Serves as point of contact on system FW technical issues with product manufacturers; hosts/attends conference calls as needed throughout development cycle
  • Provides final sign-off on code design reviews
  • Partners with procurement and administrative staff to manage FW testing needs for board builds
  • Timely notifies management staff and client to mitigate schedule slip risks regarding FW development
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Job Requirements

Education and Experience: The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or Computer Engineering; Master’s degree preferred
  • Minimum 8 years’ design experience
  • Minimum 4 years’ SW/FW lead experience
  • Demonstrated experience in successful project management
  • Embedded control experience with hardware and software
  • Experience with BLDC motor drivers, buck regulators and op amp circuits preferred
  • Experience with embedded microcontrollers system design including various RTOS’
  • Altium and PSpice schematic capture, circuit simulation and PCB layout experience preferred
  • Digital loop experience
  • Expert with C programming language in various IDEs and code revision tools e.g. JIRA, Bitbucket, etc.
  • Experience taking a product from concept to proto to mass production
  • Preferable to have experience designing, using, repairing, etc. espresso machines

  • Ability to lead a team of engineers delivering hardware and software for an embedded system
  • Ability to work virtually and in person with an international team of engineers
  • Ability to work with electrical and mechanical component suppliers to resolve system integration issues
  • Ability to analyze and solve complex problems
  • Ability to generate, read, and understand circuit schematics, BOMs and assembly drawings
  • Familiarity with mechanical 2D drawings
  • Demonstrated ability to manage projects and deliver on time and within budget
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to prepare and deliver clear, concise reports that are understandable by the target audience
  • Demonstrated initiative; results oriented
  • Proven ability to handle multiple priorities simultaneously
  • Demonstrates excellent organizational and team leadership skills
  • Proven ability to build relationships, communicate effectively, and present ideas confidently and persuasively
  • Strong computer skills that include proficiency with MS Office (Word, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint), Visio and SharePoint

Language Skills

  • Ability to read, write and speak English proficiently

  • The position routinely utilizes electronic test tools (oscilloscope, DMM, power supplies, debug probes), a digital camera and microscope.
  • This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computer, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and fax machines.
  • Travel to client office and suppliers up to an estimated 25% of the time; potential international travel requiring a valid US Passport.

This position is expected to be active approximately 3 months, depending on the scope changes. ​
