Role Summary

The Learning Architect (LA) is responsible for ensuring that assigned components (print, digital, tech, and customized) meet market needs and are delivered on time and on budget. The responsibilities of this position require independent and collaborative work in delivering assigned products. Success entails working collaboratively and coordinating with the Content Development Group teams, the Marketing teams, and other departments within the organization. He or she applies process, content, and technical knowledge to assigned projects, participates in project planning, and continues to increase personal knowledge of process, technical skills, and subject-area content.

 

Primary Responsibilities

 

  1. Works with and supports Lead LAs, Managing LAs, or Senior LAs on assigned projects to ensure specifications. Works with and supports Lead LAs, Managing LAs, or Senior LAs on assigned projects to design content for all learning products that meet specified learning and user requirements.
  2. Selects and applies appropriate HMH standards, templates, and processes to  assigned projects, including project user personas, text and language standards, authoring tools, acceptance criteria, and review documents. Coordinates LA and UX review of development outputs, including outlines, storyboards, assets, and integrated builds. Ensures HMH standards are consistently implemented.

  3. Edits manuscript according to project guidelines, schedules, budgets, and divisional standards of quality and accuracy; writes or revises portions of manuscripts, scripts, and storyboards; proofreads copy and makes necessary corrections. Prepares manuscript for release, develops and/or checks page layouts and implements all steps in the production process for assigned projects;  works closely with designers and photo researchers on page layouts, photo selection, and creation of illustrations; checks all stages of art and proof for assigned projects; develops and/or checks content of tech products and participates in all stages of their production; works with IT and tech vendors on screen layouts, image selection, sound effects, voicings, and implementation of all functionalities; effectively utilizes tech tools in the publishing process to facilitate development efficiency and enhance product quality. Work is done independently and reviewed by project owner for quality.

  4. Participates in project planning for assigned projects and makes suggestions that address customer needs; completes competitive and standards analyses, research, answer checking, fact checking, and customer correspondence.

  5. Works cooperatively and effectively with other members of cross-functional project teams, other Learning Architects, Design Architects, Production Managers, and Content Shared Services providers.

 

Education and Experience

Required

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in education or relevant discipline

 

Minimum of 3 years of educational publishing experience

Minimum of 3 years of editorial and/or learning design experience

  • Very good decision-making and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent writing and proofreading skills, with attention to detail
  • Excellent communication and organization skills
  • Ability to meet deadlines regularly and to highlight risks at early stages
  • Ability to work in a team environment
  • Passionate about creating engaging and effective (fun!) learning products
  • Strong organizational  and time management skills
  • Strong computer skills, including MS Office products and company technology tools

 

Preferred

5+ years of educational publishing experience

5+ years of editorial and/or learning design experience

Subject-matter expertise in specific curriculum area(s) e.g. 9-12 Math, K-2 curriculum

Teaching experience helpful

  • Good design/aesthetic sensibilities
  • Experience developing learning solutions for the K–12 market
  • Practical experience designing and/or deploying 21st-century learning solutions, including blogs, wikis, online forums, chat rooms, and online communities of practice
  • Practical experience contributing to the design of digital interactive games
  • Experience writing scripts for engaging time-based media such as animated cartoons, television documentaries, narrative-driven digital interactive games, etc.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
• Might be in a stationary position for a considerable time (sitting and/or standing).
• The person in this position needs to move about inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc.
• Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, and computer printer.
• Must be able to collaborate with colleagues via face to face, conference calls, and online meetings.
