Maintenance project System Engineer (AMTRAK Next Generation High Speed Train) – Signalling and Drivers’ interface


Within Maintenance Project, the System Engineers (SE) are in charge to conserve and optimize the global performances of the train: mainly Safety, Reliability and Serviceability.

They are the technical reference for all the maintenance sites for the subsystem they have in charge, and the link with the Design Authority.

Their job during warranty period is largely dedicated to support the reliability growth, eradicating the technical anomalies.

They also provide from day 1 all necessary technical inputs for Maintenance execution.



Responsibilities and Accountabilities

In the context of Next Generation High Speed Trains project, ALSTOM is offering high level of Maintenance Service to AMTRAK operator, under the form of TSSSA contract (Technical Support and Spares Supply Agreement).

Each sub-system of the train is allocated to a “Leader” System Engineer (SE) who has the global responsibility of it, that is :

1. Managing technical subjects related to Train design, in particular :

  • Design anomalies from detection to fix, leading necessary analysis, investigations, meetings…
  • Design changes from request to validation, including analysis of impact & business case if necessary

Remark: during the warranty phase, this job is lead by the Design team, and Service SE are contributing.


  1. Managing all technical subjects related to Maintenance, in particular:
  • Implementation and optimization of Maintenance Plan in operations, including related validations
  • Technical inputs to build maintenance procedures (e.g. define wear limit criteria, test procedure…)
  1. Monitoring system performance, in particular: Safety, Reliability, Serviceability.

Driving the related analysis and keeping traceability of reports, decisions, etc.

  1. Informing the Safety Assurance Manager of any safety hazard, so that it can be dealt appropriately.

Then addressing the technical job for closing the issue.

  1. Providing technical inputs to all Maintenance Site organization :
    • On-Site Engineers supporting Amtrak production team
    • Alstom Troubleshooters
    • Training Manager.
  2. Monitoring obsolescence and develop resolution plan for subsystems in charge
  3. Optimizing testability on-train (as a team with Troubleshooters) and off-train (in collaboration with external vendors and Alstom repair centers)




The present open position is more precisely related to the following subject :

On-Board Signaling System and associated means of test, Driver’s environment. 


Position in Alstom organization :

 - Reporting functionally and hierarchically to the TSSSA Project Engineering Manager ;

Candidate Requirements

Educational Requirements

B.S. Engineering degree.


Experience (Essential Functions)

Minimum 2 years working “hands on” around on-board equipment: design, validation, troubleshooting, maintenance…

Ideally in the environment of Rolling Stock warranty and reliability growth.


Working Conditions (Industrial/Environmental)

The position is based in New York, NY (Sunny Side Amtrak facility)

Average travel 20% time, especially on the other train maintenance facilitiesof Washington DC and Boston MA.
