Position Summary:
Reporting to the Senior Director of R&D Finance, the Finance Manager is a key member of Vertex's Financial Planning & Analysis organization supporting our R&D (Research and Development) organization. The role requires close collaboration with business partners across R&D to ensure cross-functional alignment and integration with our financial planning and reporting processes. The person will drive the financial planning, analysis and decision support for Global Medical Affairs, Global Regulatory Affairs and Global Patient Safety. He or she will partner closely with senior leadership to make sound business decisions and meet the company's goals and objectives.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the operating expense forecast, budget, monthly close, long-range planning, financial reporting, decision support and ad hoc analysis for Global Medical Affairs, Global Regulatory Affairs & Global Patient Safety
  • Provide expense forecasts and generate actual vs. budget analysis, explanation of variances, and forecasted operating expenses
  • Present financial results to senior leaders (VP-EVP), highlight risks/opportunities and make recommendation to improve financial outcomes
  • Drive financial planning processes (long range plan, budget) across R&D to ensure alignment and integration with Vertex planning and reporting
  • Work closely with R&D leadership to maintain effective processes to monitor and report on budget, actuals and forecast
  • Provide financial analysis and deliver insights to R&D leadership (VP-level and above) to optimize resource allocation decisions
  • Build partnerships and maintain strong relationships with senior leadership and their teams
  • Manage the monthly close process and ensure proper controls and review procedures
  • Drive continuous process improvements and simplifications in the area of responsibility

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Finance or Accounting field
  • 5 years proven experience as a Financial Analyst/Manager including business partnering capacity
  • Experience in the pharmaceutical / biotechnology industry is a plus
  • Expertise with Excel and PowerPoint; proficiency in Hyperion preferred
  • Strong business acumen and judgment; knowledge of the company's markets/products and industry trends is a plus
  • Strong analytical skills and experience in building financial models
  • Solid understanding of accounting principles and financial metrics
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, and an eagerness to collaborate with colleagues (within or outside of finance) in sharing insights and learning's and partnering to ensure timely execution of project plans
  • Possesses a continuous improvement mindset, with flexibility and ability to adapt to change
