YOUR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

The primary responsibilities of this role, Mechanical Engineer, are to: 

 

  • Provide mechanical engineering project management to capital projects, from project initiation through completion; Projects of independent execution are typically less than $1M but may reach $5M; participation as mechanical lead on Global Engineering projects greater than $5M is also required;
  • Plan, direct, coordinate and execute activities concerned with design, construction, modification, and maintenance of equipment;
  • Develop accurate project cost estimates, identify cost-saving opportunities, and update management on estimated costs of changes in design;
  • Lead project reviews and assure thorough project review and follow-up on action items;
  • Develop clear and concise appropriation requests;
  • Communicate and present background and justification to management;
  • Guide project planners to select and purchase materials and resources;
  • Select appropriate vendors; solicit bids with Purchasing, for cost optimization;
  • Guide construction field coordinators with project implementation requirements;
  • Visit job sites to review work activities, safety, and construction;
  • Document project files and closure information in a timely manner;
  • Ensure systems and equipment are designed and installed in accordance with Bayer and regulatory standards with maintainability and life cycle cost considered;
  • Provide leadership and engineering assistance to site personnel to facilitate application of plant and corporate standards, safety procedures, and other regulatory requirements;
  • Mentor and educate leadership, technicians, planners, and other engineers.

Your success will be driven by your demonstration of our LIFE values.  More specifically related to this position, Bayer seeks an incumbent who possesses the following:

 

Required Qualifications:

 

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering with at least five years of applicable engineering experience in a plant operation function including process related equipment (pumps, piping and heat exchangers, etc.);
  • Knowledge and hands-on experience with chemical manufacturing processes, including equipment, operations, and construction;
  • Experience with logical layout of construction or shutdown activities as related to project scheduling;
  • Experience with commissioning and starting up new equipment, troubleshooting and resolving technical equipment issues, and developing turnover guidelines;
  • Safety expertise that includes familiarity with OSHA Process Safety Management (PSM) procedures;
  • Knowledge of Process Industry Practices, and corporate and plant standards;
  • Knowledge of design codes, standards and regulations (i.e., ANSI, OSHA, ADA, ASME, NFPA, NEC, etc.) as may be applicable to civil, electrical, and mechanical work.
