Job Description

The Hanover Insurance Group is seeking a Personal Lines Underwriter to join our growing team in Howell, MI!

Position Overview:

Personal Lines Underwriters are responsible for underwriting risk (selection/rejection of new and renewal business) and managing a profitable portfolio within their stated authority and guidelines. The Underwriter will make basic underwriting decisions and apply insurance rules and regulations in accordance with guidelines and assigned authority levels.

This is a full-time, non-exempt role.

Responsibilities/Essential Functions:

- Analyzes and evaluates new submissions and renewal accounts to determine acceptability of the risk
- Reviews, interprets and processes data from various sources, including applications, forms and loss history
- Able to articulate and practice principles of risk management within specific limits of authority including knowledge of exposure/hazard identification and control
- Clearly communicates appetite, underwriting standards, declination reasons and coverage advantages to Agents and internal partners to ensure profitability and generate a flow of quality new business submissions and retention.
- Cultivates strong business relationships (internal and external) by proactively communicating and conveying ownership and commitments
- Anticipates and meets the needs of customers and readily adjusts priorities to respond to pressing and changing client requirements
- May require additional training and/or advance insurance education to further expand underwriting knowledge and expertise.
- Mentors and trains others

Key Measures of Success (should align with goals):

- Required to meet or exceed established individual, team and company metrics including:
o Service Level Agreements
o Productivity
o Underwriting Quality
o Successful product audit results
o Contribution to profitability (underwriting decisions are made within assigned authority level and properly documented)

Position Requirements

Required Skills & Experience and Competencies:

- Bachelor’s degree
- Excellent written and verbal communication
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work in a team environment
- Ability to work in a fast paced environment
- A high degree of self-motivation
- Ability to multi-task and adapt to new situations quickly
- An entrepreneurial appetite

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

- Ability to work in fast paced and stressful environment.
- Ability to use a personal computer and other standard office equipment.
- Ability to sit and / or stand for extended periods
- Ability to work cooperatively
