Policy Analyst/Young Children and their Families Team

Job Description

 

CSSP seeks a Policy Analyst in the Washington, DC office to join the CSSP Young Children and their Families (YCF) Team, with primary responsibility for supporting a new effort aimed at increasing the number of young children who are on track for kindergarten by age three. CSSP is a partner in a national initiative that will work with community leaders, states and national organizations to improve outcomes for the youngest children in three closely interrelated areas:  healthy beginnings, Family support and child care. We are looking for a highly motivated and knowledgeable person who will work closely with CSSP’s Project Director to implement this exciting new effort. The Policy Analyst will also support CSSP’s YCF Team more broadly.  

 

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

 

The Policy Analyst will be responsible for:

  • Helping to shape and advance community-based policy and program  opportunities and strategies to improve well-being for children, birth to age 3, as well as for pregnant women
  • Preparing high quality Community Action Briefs and other written products, webinars and presentations that share information about effective policy and program strategies with community and state partners
  • Helping to prepare and complete deliverables and reports to funders
  • Supporting ongoing work on early childhood metrics that can be used to  track progress on improving outcomes for young children and their families
  • Contributing to the support and expansion of Early Childhood-LINC (Learning and Innovation Network for Communities), through which CSSP and partners demonstrate the effectiveness of early childhood systems
  • Participating in meetings and other activities with funders, national partners and others to improve outcomes  for children birth to age 3
  • Contributing as a member of CSSP’s YCF Team and to CSSP’s work more broadly

 

Required Qualifications, Skills and Experience

 

The successful candidate will have:

  • A graduate degree (preferred) and 2-4 years of experience working on issues of importance to young children and their families in either the nonprofit sector or a combination of government and the nonprofit sector
  • Familiarity with public benefit programs and/or private initiatives that are aimed at achieving better health, well-being and financial stability for children and families, and a significant understanding of related policy opportunities and priorities
  • An understanding of the critical role parents play in the lives of young children and a strong commitment to elevating the role of parents as decision-makers and active participants in efforts to achieve positive change for young children and their families
  • Outstanding writing and oral communications skills, particularly in writing for a variety of audiences and including skills and interest in using social and other media to effect change
  • Ability to work effectively with a team and with external partners

A strong commitment to promoting racial equity and reducing disparities to achieve equitable results and social justice 

  • Experience working on issue campaigns or related activities is a plus
  • Experience working with community partners or direct leadership experience at local/community level
  • Appreciation of strategic use of data and experience using a data-driven approach to accomplishing goals
  • Experience conducting research, including data collection, and experience analyzing data and using graphs, charts and other formats to present data effectively
  • Excellent attention to detail, deadlines and organizational and time management skills; flexibility and an ability to work in a dynamic, fast-paced environment
  • Proficiency in MS-WORD, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and video conferencing technology
  • Ability and willingness to travel

Starting salary is commensurate with experience.
