The Senior Mail Clerk delivers and processes incoming and outgoing mail which requires more complex processing procedures in addition to routine mail; sorts incoming and outgoing inter-office mail to various department and branch locations; may be required to identify and resolve more complex mail preparation errors and provide problem resolution to customers.

PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Weighs and applies appropriate postage on outgoing U.S. Postal Service (USPS) mail according to the class of mail selected via 3 postage machines; identifies appropriate cost center for charge back purposes; determines mail class i.e., first class, flat presort, bar-coded presort; replenishes postage on meters via electronic transfer of funds.
  2. Ensures accurate sorting of both USPS and interoffice mail by maintaining proficient knowledge of the employee data base and department names and locations; identifies correct destination for undesignated mail by opening and evaluating contents.
  3. Performs scheduled deliveries to/form specified locations in a timely manner for the purpose of mail distribution and pickup including deliveries to city-wide locations.
  4. Accepts proof work and courier and accountable mail via the receiving window; counts, logs and delivers proof work; ensures notification and delivery of courier items; ensures pertinent information is tracked, recorded, and delivered to the intended recipient.
  5. Acts as backup operator on the OCR Reader/Sorter for the purpose of bar-coding mail: selects appropriate sort patterns using appropriate software; loads pre0metered mail for bar-coding; divides bar-coded/sorted mail into specified trays; prints tray labels; completes support documents as required by the USPS.
  6. Acts as backup operator on the automatic inserter operator: selects appropriate envelop and performs setup selection on each drop station as required by each batch; ensures high level of accuracy during insertion process of confidential customer information.
  7. Performs miscellaneous duties related to mailroom maintenance; orders supplies for the mailroom; orders express supplies such as UPS envelopes and air bills; assists with overnight mail tracking requests; assists with transportation requests by justifying special deliveries or adding to the existing schedules.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ABILITIES:
  • Working knowledge of mail operations
  • Good computer, communication, reading writing and math skills
  • Ability to operate equipment such as photocopiers, postage meters
This level of knowledge is normally acquired through completion of high school and a minimum of 9 months mail processing experience. Must have a valid driver’s license.
