Job Description:

Vertex is looking to hire an Access Sr. Specialist / Manager to join our Patient Services team. The Patient Services team (Guidance & Patient Support or "GPS") is a group of compassionate and determined individuals who provide personalized reimbursement, educational, and ongoing product support for patients who have been prescribed our medicines. GPS is comprised of three integrated teams: (1) Patient Support, (2) Operations, and (3) Communications, Adherence & Insights.

As the Access Manager, you will be a part of our Operations team, where you will play a meaningful role within GPS and contribute to the success of the program. You will lead all aspects of Access Operations in GPS. As a subject matter expert, you will be responsible for playing a crucial role in cross-functional access resolution to support patients in the best way. You will report to the Senior Manager of Access and Reimbursement Operations Management.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Monitor Patient Support Team access escalations related to reimbursement/payer challenges (escalations)
  • Act as an SME on payers and plans across patients on Vertex medicines
  • Identify trends in reimbursement and payer challenges, work cross-functionally to find the root cause of escalations
  • Represent Patient Services at the cross-functional access meetings
  • Work closely with District Leaders and Director of Case Management to react quickly to escalated situations
  • Create detailed plans of action for a resolution to access escalations
  • Work with partner IT team on escalations process, continuous improvement for internal and external reporting, trend monitoring
  • Seasonal and launch planning, training, and execution
  • Ensure alignment on any process changes, WI updates
  • Data steward for Mosaic payer spine, escalations/payer challenges
  • Co-lead the Patient Services Reimbursement REP team
  • Act in complete and total compliance with all laws, regulations and Vertex policies.


  • Bachelor's Degree and 3+ years of experience in the healthcare/pharmaceutical industry
  • Basic understanding of payer structure, landscape, and impact to patient support, including commercial, Medicare, Medicaid and other payer types
  • Intellectually curious with a continuous improvement mindset; high customer service aptitude, seeks to understand and self-educate on current trends in the healthcare and payer market
  • Understands how systems and databases are structured, has the ability to consolidate multiple data sources, and synthesize large datasets into key findings and recommendations.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in patient-focused programs within associated HIPAA regulations and other legal parameters and patient privacy policies Patient-centric and customer service minded
  • Product Launch experience of drugs with complex service models
  • Experience in pharmaceutical access and reimbursement, commercial systems, and analytics
  • Highly organized with the ability to work independently, facilitate appropriate discernment in decision-making as well as be a great teammate
  • Willingness to work in a fast pace environment, and have the ability to multi-task and self-prioritize workload
  • Attention to detail and committed follow-through in communication to internal and external partners
  • Excellent written communication skills, presentation delivery as well as strong interpersonal skills
