Local Government Reporter-Lincoln, NE

The Lincoln Journal Star is seeking an enterprising reporter to cover city government in Nebraska's capital city.

The city hall beat is one of our most challenging and exciting beats. We're looking for a reporter who will dig deeper than meeting coverage and cultivate sources to stay ahead of developing stories. The reporter who covers it must be prepared to tackle a range of subjects including the city's finances and budgeting; the politics associated with a strong mayor-council form of government and their interaction with other elected officials and civic leaders; and city and county departments covering everything from urban development, parks and libraries to human services, community corrections and animal control.

A mix of breaking news, meeting coverage, quick-turn and longer-range enterprise stories will be expected. This is a demanding beat. We want a candidate who can ask tough questions, investigate trends and find fresh angles to pursue. The person who takes this job must not only be adept at traditional newspaper writing but also should be comfortable with incorporating video and using social media to build engagement with readers.

What we're looking for:

A bachelor's degree in journalism or a related field is preferred.
  • At least two years of reporting experience
  • Strong writing skills
  • Background in political reporting a plus
  • Proficiency in mining data and public records
  • Experience in digital storytelling
  • Social media skills
