What We Need
Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering or a bachelor’s degree in engineering technology (MS in Engineering or MBA preferred).
Ten or more years of successful experience in system operations, engineering or other related fields.
Direct experience with the electric energy industry required.
Previous experience with operational technology (OT) systems and their integration into electric T&D operations is highly desirable.
Preferred experience in protection and control systems, with a strong understanding of their role in enhancing OT functions.
Preferred knowledge of emerging technologies
Proven track record of leading cross-functional teams and managing complex projects within the energy sector.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to adapt to emerging industry trends and technologies.
What You’ll Do At LIPA
The Grid Modernization and Advanced Operations Leader is a pivotal role within the Electric Transmission & Distribution (T&D) Operations group at LIPA, responsible for spearheading the oversight, and defining the strategic initiatives related to grid modernization technologies, with a focus on operational technology (OT) functions. The role plays a critical part in redefining electric system operations by integrating next-generation technologies—including artificial intelligence, automation, and advanced analytics—to enhance system intelligence, flexibility, and resilience. Key areas of focus include the deployment and optimization of advanced load flow tools, Distribution Management Systems (DMS), Distributed Energy Resource Management Systems (DERMS), Outage Management Systems (OMS), Advanced Distribution Management Systems (ADMS), Volt-VAR optimization, and real-time system operations.
This position will also be responsible for defining the physical and technological requirements and overseeing the implementation to modernize the control room ensuring it is equipped to support a digital, and advanced grid.
The leader ensures that project implementation remains aligned with the organization’s strategic goals by actively monitoring progress and guiding decisions to support long-term objectives.
Collaboration is central to this role. The individual shall work closely with internal and OSA provider teams—including IT, system operations, protection and control engineering, system planning, field operations, and customer care—to ensure cohesive and effective project execution. They shall also engage with external stakeholders and industry peers to adopt and contribute to best practices in grid modernization. Through these efforts, the leader helps drive LIPA’s transition to a cleaner, smarter, and more sustainable energy future.
Essential Job Functions include:
Serve as the System Owner for Grid Modernization OT platforms, ensuring alignment with strategic goals and regulatory compliance.
Lead rigorous analysis to identify and initiate initiatives that enhance LIPA’s grid modernization capabilities, with a strong emphasis on OT functions.
Define and prioritize functional requirements for OT systems, including DMS, DERMS, and protection and control systems, to support real-time monitoring, fault detection, and overall grid performance.
Develop and maintain a strategic roadmap for OT functionality, ensuring responsiveness to industry trends and emerging opportunities.
Collaborates closely with the IT organization which is responsible for system administration, technical implementation, and support, to ensure seamless alignment between business needs and technical execution.
Responsible for defining the scope of T&D-related technology projects, defining functional and business requirements, articulating business benefits, and securing senior executive project approvals
Provide business owner oversight for project implementation activities and make key business decisions regarding implementation options and configurations
Recommend resource strategies to support OT-related initiatives, collaborating with system operations, IT, and other key functions.
Partner with IT to provide cross-functional leadership to ensure effective coordination of major OT projects across business departments and disciplines.
Leverage emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, and advanced data analytics to transform system operations—enhancing situational awareness, enabling predictive decision-making, and redefining the role of system operators in a modern, intelligent grid environment.
Foster collaborative engagement across the organization to drive participation and alignment in grid modernization efforts.
Represent LIPA in industry forums, contributing to best practices and advocating for the company’s position on grid modernization and energy policy.
Provide operational insights to the regulatory team to support policy development and advocacy.
Integrate energy storage and distributed energy resources (DERs) to enhance grid flexibility, resilience, and sustainability.
Define the business and functional requirements for digital grid solutions and robust cybersecurity measures to protect critical infrastructure and ensure secure operations.
Drive initiatives that support the transition to cleaner energy sources and sustainable grid practices.
Leverage expertise in protection and control to strengthen OT functions and ensure reliable grid operations.
Define the business and functional requirements for the integration of protection and control systems with OT to optimize real-time monitoring and fault detection, improving overall system performance.
Provide strategic oversight and direction for construction initiatives that support the modernization of electric system operations, including the development of new control room infrastructure and related facilities.
Lead the planning, design, and execution of infrastructure projects that enable advanced operational technology capabilities and enhance system reliability.
Coordinate with engineering, construction, and operations teams to ensure that facility upgrades align with grid modernization goals and technical requirements.
Oversee budgeting, scheduling, and resource allocation for construction projects, ensuring timely and cost-effective delivery.
Ensure that all construction activities comply with safety standards, regulatory requirements, and industry best practices.
Facilitate cross-functional collaboration to integrate new infrastructure with existing systems and technologies, minimizing disruption and maximizing operational efficiency.
Monitor construction progress and mitigate risks to ensure successful project outcomes and alignment with strategic objectives.
Perform other related tasks and assignments as required.
