Job Summary:<\/b><\/p>
The Electrical Engineer Substation Lead is responsible for Substation designs for major capital projects in Connecticut (United Illuminating UI), ensuring each project is engineered in compliance with regulations, company standards, and consistently across the board; this includes input into standards and training needs.<\/p>
The electric delivery system in Connecticut contains approximately 130 miles of transmission lines and 28 bulk electric supply substations.<\/p>
Position reports to the Unit Manager, but the position will work day-to-day in cross functional project team and support project needs as dictated by the Project Manager and Unit Manager.<\/p>
Responsibilities: <\/b><\/p>
\uf0be Capital project engineering performance including all phases such as: scoping and budgeting, conceptual engineering, contract management and design, engineering design, construction, and closeout.
\uf0be Perform standard and complex electrical engineering analyses, designs and calculations using standard methodology and principles and other viable approaches. Develop alternate methods or design concepts to resolve problems or to improve processes\/services.
\uf0be Responsible for leading and creating new conceptual designs and overseeing the work of external detailed designers.
\uf0be Solve unique and complex electrical engineering problems. Analyzes possible solutions and assesses each using standard procedures related to lines and power engineering.
\uf0be Ensure all engineering designs implemented by the company meet applicable company, local, state, and national codes, and standards.
\uf0be Support technical requests from current and proposed customers.
\uf0be Utilize knowledge to influence and guide department engineers.
\uf0be Provide technical leadership in complex projects that have a wide impact on the department.
\uf0be Maintain, & understand drawings (e.g. schematics, one-line diagrams, etc,\u2026).
\uf0be Mentor, develop and support team in technical skills.
\uf0be Ability to collaborate across departments.
\uf0be Liaison \/ direct contractors on company policy, standards, and best practices

General responsibilities include assisting in the development of P&C engineering standards, relay setting file templates, record keeping processes, and engineering tools. The engineer will also participate in the evaluation of new vendors and technologies.<\/p>
The position requires conducting engineering analysis, researching white papers and manuals, organizing and facilitating meeting, presenting to technical and non-technical audiences, and documenting assignments. This position requires collaboration with other P&C engineers, other departments, contractors, and vendors.
As a lead engineer, this position grants autonomy to propose solutions to open-ended challenges but requires the engineer to work mostly autonomously. The lead engineer is expected to provide informal mentorship to junior engineers.
Active projects include engineering a pilot IEC 61850 process bus substation, evaluating Virtualized Protection Relays (VPR) and Centralized Substation Protection (CSP), evaluating new relay vendors, updating engineering standards, and writing conference papers.<\/p>

Active projects include engineering a pilot IEC 61850 process bus substation, evaluating Virtualized Protection Relays (VPR) and Centralized Substation Protection (CSP), evaluating new relay vendors, updating engineering standards, and writing conference papers.<\/p>

Lead Electrical Engineer within the Digital Grid organization is responsible for overseeing the portfolio of projects assigned to the unit. This role ensures that each project adheres to regulatory requirements, company standards, and maintain consistency through. The electric delivery system in Maine contains approximately 2,600 miles of transmission lines & 317 substations. The electric delivery system in New York contains approximately 5,600 miles of transmission lines & 621 substations (for a total of 8,200 miles and 965 substations).<\/p>

The Lead Engineer - Protection & Control consults and guides project engineers on protection engineering for electric transmission and substation system protection projects to ensure system reliability and safety. The Lead Engineer - Protection & Control guides engineering studies to evaluate equipment, system effectiveness, and protection system operations.<\/p>

The Lead Engineer leads and guides the Protection Engineering group across AVANGRID in their technical training and development.
